Soil Vapor Extraction: What It Is, How It Works, & Necessary Tools
Soil vapor extraction is one of the most widely used remediation methods for sites impacted by volatile organic compounds (VOCs), petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, and other vapor-forming contaminants. When contamination is present in unsaturated soil above the groundwater table, vapors can migrate through pore spaces, create vapor intrusion concerns, and complicate site closure. Soil vapor extraction, often shortened to SVE, helps remove those vapors by applying a vacuum to the subsurface and directing contaminated soil gas to an aboveground treatment system. For environmental consultants, remediation contractors, and field technicians, successful SVE work depends on more than the blower or extraction well. The quality of the sampling network, tubing, valves, fittings, vapor points, and monitoring accessories all influence whether the system can be evaluated, optimized, and documented properly. That is why purpose-built vapor and gas sampling supplies are essential throughout investigation, pilot testing, system startup, and long-term performance monitoring.
