What is In Situ Remediation?
Environmental contamination can happen below the surface in ways that are difficult to see, measure, or remove. Contaminants may move through groundwater, collect in soil pores, bind to organic matter, or remain trapped in low-permeability zones long after the original release. When that happens, cleanup teams need remediation methods that can reach the affected area without always excavating or removing large volumes of material. That is where in situ remediation becomes especially important. In situ remediation treats contamination where it is found, directly in the subsurface. Instead of digging up soil or pumping all impacted groundwater to the surface for treatment, remediation professionals use biological, chemical, thermal, physical, or containment-based strategies to treat contaminants in place.
